With a unique culinary worldview, Chef Antonio Bourdain moved out of the kitchen to become a best-selling author and award- winning TV personality. Bourdainhe was executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles. The chef also wrote an article called ‘Don’t Read Before You Eat This’ which appeared in ‘The New Yorker’ in 1997. After that, Bourdain moved on from one high-profile culinary project after another. Little by little, he started working on TV shows like ‘A Cook’s Tour’ and ‘Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations’. Bourdain grew up in suburban New Jersey although he was born on June 25, 1956, in New York City. As a child he was interested in literature and loved listening to rock music. The reason was that his mother was a publisher and his father was a music executive. In his childhood, Bourdain enjoyed vacations with his family.
He enrolled at ‘Vassar College’ for two years and later graduated in 1978 from the world renowned ‘Culinary Institute of America’. Bourdain began working in the kitchens of New York restaurants such as the ‘Supper Club’, ‘One-Fifth Avenue’ and ‘Sullivan’s’. In 1998, he became Executive Chef at ‘Brasserie Les Halles’.

The chef wrote about the moment his love for food and cooking was awakened. It was on a family vacation in France that he tasted his first oyster on a fishing boat. He graduated from Dwight-Englewood School, Englewood, New Jersey in 1973. After his childhood interest in cooking as a career, he worked in seafood restaurants in Provincetown, Massachusetts while attending Vassar and was inspired to continue cooking as a career. Ultimately, Bourdain attended the ‘Culinary Institute of America’ and graduated in 1978. After that, he began running various restaurant kitchens in New York City.
After working many years in the culinary field, Bourdain in 1998 finally became executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles, Manhattan. His work and dedication as executive chef was considered highly impactful and thus he was recognized as their ‘chef at large’ in January 2014. Bourdain later left his job to start his own television show. . In 2017, Les Halles had to close because it went bankrupt.
