More competition in Central Maui is one reason the Salvation Army’s Kahului Corps will close its Family Store in Kahului on Saturday, an official said Monday.
“We’ve made a business decision to consolidate thrift operations at our two other Maui locations and close the Kahului store,” Capt. Robert Steiner, Maui County coordinator for The Salvation Army, said in an announcement.
The public can continue to make store donations and shop at 35 Halekuai St. in Kihei and at 131 Shaw St. in Lahaina.
When the current Central Maui store opened in 2012 in Kahului, there was less competition from other thrift stores such as Savers and Goodwill, Steiner said.
Although the Kahului store at 330 Papa Place is busy, Steiner said that the organization wanted to make better use of its resources.
The family services offices located in the Kahului store will be relocated to the Salvation Army’s Kahului Community Center on Kamehameha Avenue. The store’s several employees will be transferred to the Kihei store, Steiner said.
Clients have also been notified of the closure.
As far as impacting the community, Steiner said the Salvation Army’s two remaining stores and other thrift stores in Central Maui are sufficient to meet demand. However, Salvation Army vouchers may be used at the nonprofit’s remaining stores in Kihei and Lahaina.
Steiner added that clients may use the Maui Bus system with bus stops outside its Kahului offices to make the trip to the other stores.
The Kahului store will maintain its regular hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Saturday.
Donations may be picked up by calling the Salvation Army at 875-8367.
