Spencer Johnson is an Australian professional cricketer who has represented his country in the shortest format (T20I) of the sport. In the Australian domestic circuit, he has played for his home state of South Australia (2017-18-Present), as a pace bowler. In franchise-based T20 leagues, he has turned out for the Brisbane Heat (2022-23-Present) in the BBL (Big Bash League – Australia’s premier professional franchise-based T20 league). Spencer has also played for the Oval Invincibles (2023-Present) in The Hundred, a professional franchise 100-ball cricket tournament that was introduced by the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board – the governing body of the sport in these 2 countries) as a new format of cricket that was played for the first time in July and August 2021.

Spencer Johnson Facts
Spencer made his first-class debut for South Australia in February 2023 – in the 8th round of the 2022-23 season of the Sheffield Shield (the premier first-class cricket competition in Australia). He produced excellent bowling figures (6/87 in 23.3 overs) in the 3rd innings of that match although the performance was not enough to prevent a 177-run defeat.
In the very next (9th) round of the season, he produced another excellent spell (7/47 in 23 overs), this time in the 2nd innings of the match. Unfortunately, South Australia lost this match too – by 5 wickets.
In August 2023, Spencer made his debut for the Oval Invincibles in the team’s 3rd match of the 3rd season of The Hundred. He captured 3 wickets while conceding just 1 run from his quota of 20 balls in this match – helping the Oval Invincibles win by 94 runs.
The team finished in 1st place in the league phase of the tournament by winning 6 of its 8 matches, thus qualifying directly for the final. In the final, the team won by 14 runs to win this competition for the 1st time – the 3rd different team to have won this competition in its first 3 seasons.
Previously, the franchise’s women’s team had won the 2021 as well as the 2022 seasons (the first 2) of The Hundred. Despite this, the Oval Invincibles had to share the feat of being the first franchise to have won both the men’s and women’s titles of The Hundred with the Southern Brave. That franchise had won the men’s title in 2021 and lifted the women’s title in 2023.
Spencer made his T20I (and international) debut for Australia on August 30, 2023, in the 1st match of a 3-match bilateral away series against South Africa. He captured the last 2 wickets in South Africa’s innings as Australia cruised to a mammoth 111-run victory. He was not included in the 2nd match of the series but played the 3rd (and last) match which Australia won by 5 wickets to take the series by a 3-0 margin.
