The 5 Most Powerful Moments at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards

It’s no secret that the VMA’s are known for it’s eccentric performances and moments. From the iconic Britney Spears performance with a snake in 2001 to Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke’s twerking performance in 2013, the VMA’s are about pushing boundaries and exploring artistic talent.

2017 was no different. Incredible performances were given and iconic fashion statements were made. However, this year felt a little different. Rather than it simply being about entertainment, this year had a focus. Empowerment.

With so many tragedies and political issues sweeping the globe, the VMA’s did not hold back from expressing these concerns and more importantly, providing a sense of hope that the world can become a better place.

From Jared Leto’s heartfelt tribute to P!nk’s touching speech, here’s a few of the most powerful moments from the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards.

1. Jared Leto Pays Tribute to Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington

Last month Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington sadly lost his life to suicide. Having touched so many lives in the past, this tribute was incredibly heartfelt & showcased just how many people loved Chester. Jared ended the speech by addressing those who are struggling with similar issues that the late Linkin Park frontman dealt with. “The absolute biggest breakthroughs in life lie just beyond the darkest days,”.

 2. Transgender Military Members On The Red Carpet

President Trump’s recent ban on Transgender Military Members caused public outcry and highlighted one of the many issues facing society. So what better way to shut down the discrimination than by bringing 4 active members of the military to the VMAs to raise awareness and prove that EVERY US citizen who is capable should be allowed to serve in the US Military.

3. Logic, Alessia Cara & Khalid Perform “1-800-273-8255”

Perhaps the most iconic performance of the night – Logic, Alessia Cara and Khalid brought             attention to mental health and suicide. With nothing but the music and simple visuals, this               performance raised awareness and provided hope. The stage was outlined with people who               are survivors of suicide attempts, making for a moving and unforgettable moment. An incredible speech about mental health, racism and fighting for your rights topped off this performance. “I don’t give a damn if you’re black white or anything in between. We’re all born equal, but we’re treated unequal,”

4. Alessia Cara Performs “Scars To Your Beautiful”

Alessia Cara has always been an advocate for self-love and this performance doesn’t back away from that. Beginning in makeup and a glamorous dress, the songstress is shown to be taking off her makeup and replacing the dress with an outfit that makes her more comfortable – proving to everyone out there that we are beautiful beyond superficial beauty expectations and that we should be proud of our bodies and natural self.

5. P!nk Accepts the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award

It’s no secret that P!nk has always been badass and true to herself. It’s one of the many reasons we all love her. So when she took to the stage to accept her award and told a story about her 6 year old daughter not feeling beautiful, she took the opportunity to prove to us all that beauty is superficial and that we’re all unique in our own ways. Just another reason why we will always love P!nk.
